Bone Grafts
Dental bone grafting is frequently used to create a solid base for a dental implant. The bone your teeth sits in does not only ser ve as the foundation for your teeth, it also plays an important part in your appearance. Bone can be lost by tooth or gum disease or, if a tooth is missing or extracted, the bone may collapse into the empty socket and cause a sunken appearance to your cheeks or jaw. Also, dental bone disappears after teeth are extracted. In some people the bone is simply too narrow and/or shallow to provide a stable foundation for dental implants. A bone graft can fix these conditions caused by dental disease or that results from an accident, and can be used to create a solid foundation for a dental implant. The good new is that problems or insufficiencies in the underlying bone structure do not automatically eliminate you as a candidate for dental implants. With modern bone grafting techniques, you can still benefit from the superior qualities of dental implants to replace dentures or removable bridges.
The bone that supports our teeth is subject to periodontal disease, but can also be injured by ill-fitting dentures. The missing bone can be replaced with bone that is taken from somewhere else in your body, can be synthetic or recovered from a cadaver, or can even come from bovine sources. Eventually, your own newly formed bone will replace much of the grafted material. This gives us the opportunity to solidly anchor implants of the proper length and width, as well as the ability to more effectively restore a pleasant appearance and full functionality to your mouth.
