Inlays/Onlays

Inlays and onlays can be used when a healthy enamel portion of a damaged tooth remains intact. An inlay or onlay is like a puzzle piece, and is fitted to the healthy part of the tooth to increase its strength. This piece is usually crafted out of porcelain or gold, but can also be made of a composite material.

An inlay is used when the cusps of your tooth are undamaged; the inlay is essentially placed within these cusps. An onlay is used with a more damaged tooth, and is placed over at least one of the cusps on the tooth. If you’re a good candidate for either procedure, we will explain the best approach for your specific situation and answer any questions you may have.

Procedure

The inlay/onlay process can be accomplished generally within two or three office visits. First, we’ll remove all decay from the tooth and take an impression of it. This impression will be sent to our lab, where your new restoration will be crafted. While this happens, we will provide you with a temporary restoration which will allow for normal chewing and appearance.

During your second visit, we will place your finished inlay or onlay and carefully fit it to feel like one of your natural teeth. Once done, we’ll cement the inlay/onlay into your mouth, leaving you with a beautifully restored smile and pain-free chewing ability.
