Over the years, a tooth’s structure and functionality can degrade for a variety of reasons, including bruxism (teeth grinding), general decay, a cracked filling, root canal and many other reasons. If a tooth is beyond repair with a filling material, a dental crown may be the best option to restore it. Dental crowns can be constructed of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or gold, each with its own characteristics. During your consultation, we’ll explain to you the nuances and help you choose the type of dental crown that best fits your particular needs. We provide dental crowns for patients in Millburn, Short Hills, West Orange, Maplewood, Springfield, Summit and throughout northern New Jersey.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown – sometimes called a “cap” – is a tooth-like covering placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth. Used to strengthen, restore or improve the appearance of your natural teeth, a dental crown is placed on an individual tooth much like a thimble over your finger. One of the most common functions of a dental crown is to support the tooth when there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. Crowns may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that is fractured or broken.

What is a Dental Crowns Procedure Like?

The dental crown can usually be accomplished in two office visits. In more challenging cases, a third visit is sometimes required. During the restorative procedure, we first anesthetize the area to be treated. Next, we remove any decay and carefully shape and contour the tooth or teeth to be crowned to allow the crown sufficient space for proper fit and appearance. Finally, we make an impression of the area and fit the teeth involved with a temporary dental crown to protect the teeth until the next appointment and to allow normal chewing and appearance. The impression is sent to our lab where the dental crown will be custom-crafted to fit perfectly.

During the second office visit, we will remove the temporary crown and evaluate the final crown for proper fit before placing it permanently, making final adjustments if necessary. We evaluate the color match and appearance, the chewing and biting accuracy, and the compatibility with the gums. We’re always very thorough to accomplish the best results.
